Orange Coast College proposes to have the Marine Science Department develop a program with three marine science study abroad classes at St. Andrew’s University in Scotland. By creating an abroad program to Scotland, we are supporting OCC’s mission to provide innovative programs and services that support foundational skills and lifelong learning for our students. In developing a study abroad program to Scotland we strive to improve classroom instruction through field-based learning which is the keystone to any successful marine science program. Through field-based learning we can present marine science classic experimental demonstration of competition in the field which was first conducted in Scotland’s rocky intertidal community. For students who struggle with traditional learning, field studies provide the opportunity to engage in content through a more holistic approach not replicable in the more one-dimension classroom setting. Field studies give students a greater understanding of the concepts and tends to generate more enthusiasm for the topic which is also critical for students who are potentially interested in a career in marine science. The CCIE Institutional grant would be critical in helping to develop the abroad program to Scotland by helping to offset the costs of scouting out the specific locations and trips we will complete with students in the class. The Institutional Grant asks for money to develop and implement the program in Scotland. A visit to the locations, St. Andrews university, and university dorms is necessary. For each potential location, we need to investigate the general logistics and feasibility of each site (or activity) to know how we could incorporate it into class as a course excursion.
