NEW United States Internationalization Strategy

Succeeding Globally Through International Education and Engagement (revised in 2022)

The U.S. Department of Education’s updated international strategy reaffirms the Department’s commitment to preparing today’s students for a hyper-connected world. Underlying the strategy is the notion that advancing educational achievement and increasing economic viability are worthy pursuits.

The initial international strategy, upon which this updated strategy is based, was developed through extensive consultation within the Department, as well as with other U.S. government agencies and nongovernmental organizations. Since its establishment, the strategy has been used to guide the Department’s international activities and engagement.

Why an international focus?
More than ever, it is vital to prepare students to engage with the world. We must begin to reimagine and rebuild the future of education and provide all learners with the opportunity to grow and thrive. An effective domestic education agenda must aim to develop a globally and culturally competent citizenry equipped with critical thinking and creativity to solve complex problems, well-honed communication skills, language ability, and STEM skills. Such competencies enable students to appreciate our multicultural society, address global challenges and opportunities, find fulfilling jobs, and promote American national security.

Strategic Objectives:
Three interrelated objectives outlined below will advance the Department’s larger strategic goals:

Increase global and cultural competencies of all U.S. students
Learn from and with other countries to strengthen U.S. education
Engage in active education diplomacy to advance U.S. international priorities
The activities supporting these objectives are undertaken by program offices across the Department and, in some cases, in cooperation with other U.S. government agencies.
