International Development

Programs/ activities that include bilateral and cooperative agreements that provide ESL, technical, vocational, occupational, language, and knowledge transfer to other countries. Emphasis is to provide resource development, training, consultation, educational services and professional development opportunities in relevant disciplines and technologies. Long-term and short-cycle business and academic agreement/ programs are coordinated with an international network of participating institutions having similar interests. Some result in establishment of branch campuses. Related programs: international virtual and distance education, marketing colleges abroad; customize training for foreign delegations; supervise oversee international education initiatives and sister colleges.

International Economic Development

Programs/activities that highlight global education and services, technology deployment, continuous workforce improvement, cross-cultural training, and international trade and development. Concentrates on preparing businesses to understand national and international politics and economics, the dynamics of the world marketplace and emerging occupations being affected by world trade to strengthen economic growth and global competitiveness. Related programs include export assistance services; organize seminars/workshops and technical assistance to local businesses; Cross-Cultural Training; and International Business and Trade.

COAST CCD: 

Coastline houses the Center for International Development that develops short-term projects to train local businesses for international trade. On-going projects with Yucatan and China as part of “Collaborative Learning Model” joint class projects. International Consultation Projects with USAID in economics in Tanzania; in Indonesia; in higher education and legal issues in Vietnam. Exchange students from Kobe University who study medical technology at GWC and OCC. Exchange students from Barnsley College in England at GWC.  2 faculty members, Business and English visited Universidad Autonoma de Mexico (Mexico City) in 2004 and in 2005 Mexico Universidad Technologica de Cancun and Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan to offer 2 two-day to deliver a 2-day workshop to offer Mexican university faculty instructional design strategies for online courses and provide hands-on web training on how to move course content online, thus creating hybrid (online/in-class) courses.

CITRUS: 

Four levels of expanded Intensive English Language Program. 25 students in program, stay for one year and then transfer to Citrus college. International Trade and Development Center.

CHAFFEY: Trade program and other initiatives with the Department of Commerce.

COLLEGE OF THE DESERT: 

Working on establishing articulation with a college in Japan whereby students would complete on year in Japan, come to our college for the additional year and graduate with a U.S. A.A. Degree. Opened an intensive English School – Intensive English Academy.

EL CAMINO: 

Our faculty are helping partner universities in Poland nad Ukraine raise funds for joint projects and have developed new curricula in the area of child development, cross-cultural communication, educational psychology, etc. The International Trade Development Center has a California-Mexico Trade Assistance Center and are developing Business Training Centers in Ukraine.

FOOTHILL: 

In startup phase of a $ 1 million annual contract with Credit Suisse, the second largest bank in Switzerland, to provide training to middle and upper level managers in the best practices of American banking combined with 3-9 month internship opportunities in banks around California. EAST L.A.: East L.A. College has intensive ESL program and welcomed a group of students from Taiwan.

GLENDALE: 

Museum in Baja, Mexico. L.A. Pierce: Working on establishing a program with several Chinese colleges in the Henan Province. Sent a group last year to China.

LAKE TAHOE: 

Supports Intensive Spanish Summer Institute which had 557 students, 49 faculty, and 57 conversation leaders. Students had an opportunity to choose from 257 break out sessions in addition to the regular daily 6 hour grammar/conversation class. Several students and faculty came from other states, Mexico, and Spain. Two language institutes representatives here and gave away about 8 scholarships for study abroad.

LOS RIOS CCD: Developing ties with San Jose State to plan a set of courses in Brazil.

MT. SAN ANTONIO: 

Working on faculty and student exchange with the Vocational and Technical College of Inner Mongolia. Developing a sabbatical proposal for Biology Department faculty to observe Japanese Science classes at the junior college and high school levels and to assist science students in their study of English for scientific careers. PACE program sponsored 30 KBG cooking school students at a 1-week program called “Contemporary Trends in American Cuisine.” Developing a 5-day seminar for Chinese government officials on the topic of education, quality controls and ESL classes for Chinese Chid School students coming in two groups this summer. Contract pending for Huijia School in Beijing students to attend ESL summer program. International Business Center conducts training and offers services to businesses doing international trade. Is affiliated with Center for International Trade Consortium at Citrus College. The Training Source conducts training on-site in a variety of topics. This organization also designs short-term training for international groups who come to SAC for professional development training.

OHLONE: Programs with Cisco in India and in Taighon, China.

RIVERSIDE: 

College is the headquarters for World Affairs Council of Inland Southern California and is the only Community College with such a headquarter. Various Foreign Policy Forums are offered through this Council as are tour meetings for good high school students and American Foreign Policy K-12 teacher education on international affairs through the consortium “Inland Empire Consortia for International Studies.” Sister-institution relationship with the University of Asmara in Eritrea for cooperative programs in computer confirmation systems, health science and distance learning. Sister-institution relationship with Wuyi university in Jiangmen, China for cooperative programs in Early Childhood Education, language, culture and other areas. Had the American Council on Education and the University of Conneticus on campus a couple of weeks ago studying our “study abroad” program.

SISKIYOUS: English Language Program with China

STATECENTERCCD: 

Board Member of CCID which is involved worldwide with many projects. Particular projects in Guyana and Eastern Europe.

SAN DIEGO CCD: Cal-Mex-Net Project sponsored 2004 exchanges:

  • ACCESS and ICATMI: Trade & culture Mission to Michoacan that focus on the importation and sale of arts and crafts from Mexico. Investigating possibility of initiating an English language and computer training program in San Diego for migrant workers from Michoacan.
  • ISCET and City College co-host a CECATI Electronics instructor in San Diego for purpose of expanding existing CECATI/SDCCD/ISCET linkages and Certification Program activities
  • U.S. educational representative to develop report and visit CECATI sites in Mexico to determine potential for developing Spanish language Exportation training and certification program with distance education component. Builds on established International Micoenterprise Training (IMET) program
  • Faculty Representative from National University, San Diego to visit Mexico City and establish contacts with institutions of higher education focusing on the development of internship programs in Teacher Education
  • Miramar Automotive Faculty conduct site visits and develop train-the-trainer modules with Schools designated by Toyota and CECATI ad T-Ten Partners in Mexico. Purpose is to establish cross-border working relationships, share information and identify areas for future development. 1st year: focus on tour of school and industry sites. 2nd year: training the trainer activity.
  • CET Ceramics faculty spent a week teaching Arts & Crafts at Benjamin Franklin Institute in Tecate, Baja.
  • Dean of Technical Careers and Workforce Initiatives, Miramir will conduct train-the-trainer workshops at CECATI sites in Automotive Technology
  • San Diego City: 1999 – International Business Certificate with Niels Brock of Denmark.
  • 1998-2000 – Borderlands Workforce Development Project. Collaborative project with CECATI and industry leaders from both sides of the border participating in the development of bilingual certification programs in Welding and Electronics
  • 1998-1999 – Global Education Network – San Diego Region – provides a regional and district wide infrastructure for the development and support of international and global education. Involves faculty, students, business, educational, community and international partners.

SANTA ROSA: Hosted 20 Swedish students for a 5-week program

STATE CENTER: 

Board member of CCID which is involved worldwide with many projects. Particular projects in Guyana and Eastern Europe. Reedley College also participates in the CASS program

VENTURA CCD: 

Photo teacher took students to Cuba on grant program – non-credit. Agreement with Japanese colleges to accept their students and they come to Oxnard College for 1-2 years. Have CITD.

WEST VALLEY/ MISSION CCD: 

Honduras program 1999 – 2000 RECRAC/PETE program with Escuela Agricola de Panasresica (Zanoraro).

YOSEMITE CCD: 

For 11 years Modesto has hosted students through the Central American Scholarship Program/Georgetown University/IEUD. 1998-1999 there will be 16 Central American Students graduating from the program. 1999-2000 there will be 18 new students arriving to study food processing. For the past 4 years we have hosted students from Germany through the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program. Also continues with the CASS program (Cooperative Association of States for Scholarships).

  • 1999 – Initiated Sister College exchanges with Aquascaliente, Mexico. Yosemite District delegation visited Aguascalientes, Mexico to understand their needs, how we might be able to meet those needs, to share what our colleges have to offer and to recruit students to our colleges.
