CCIE DUES FOR 2016-2017 AND FOR 2017-2018

CCIE wants to remind all our members that, now, more than ever, it is important to pay your dues. CCIE dues are collected on the academic year - July 1 - June 30. It is critical that every member be current with their dues in order for CCIE to continue to support activities such as the Newsletter, Web-Page, Workshops, and Student Scholarships. Please process your 2016-2017 dues into your budget. CCIE does appreciate the effort that all of you are doing to help support international education at our colleges. However, advocacy needs to continue on many levels, and support of CCIE is central in this process.

CCIE INSTITUTIONAL GRANT COMPETITION 2017: DUE MARCH 27, 2017

CCIE announces the 2017 Institutional Grant competition. The key elements to increasing international education at our colleges are the availability of programs and the building of a cohort of leadership. Hence, the purpose of these grants is to provide start-up funding for institutions wanting to either create a new international program or augment an existing international program and to create a new cohort of CCIE international education mentors. A total of three CCIE Institutional Grants will be competitively awarded to assist colleges overcome institutional barriers by better planning and implementing international education programs. Past grant recipients will help to mentor new awardees.

Amount of Grants: An institutional grant, up to $ 3,000, will be awarded to a CCIE member college that is current with their dues. The Duedate for the 2017 Institutional Grant applications is March 27. Please contact Rosalind at rabyrl@aol.com for an application.

CCIE remains fully committed to our mission to “increase international understanding through education and collaboration. The consortium helps support the growth of programs affiliated to international education:
a) Faculty Exchanges;
b) International Business;
c) International Development/ Contract Education;
d) International Students;
e) Internationalizing the Curriculum; and
f) Study Abroad.” We will continue to advocate for international higher education collaboration among the California community colleges and to partners throughout the country and the world.

CCIE fully supports Chancellor’s Eloy Ortiz Oakley’s (Chancellor, California Community Colleges) statement in response to President Trump's executive order that we “support the ability of all students attending our colleges to attend without fear or intimidation.” We also support Chancellor Timothy White (CSU system) statement of “being an inclusive and welcoming institution of higher education that is enhanced by our students, faculty, staff and alumni from our global community.”

Colleagues, Over the weekend the Trump administration issued an executive order that restricts the ability of students, faculty and staff from certain countries from being able to enter the United States. The action caused great concern at colleges and universities across the nation. We also witnessed growing protests and confusion over the implementation of the executive order. As the California Community Colleges Board of Governors clearly stated, we support the ability of all students attending our colleges to attend without fear or intimidation. I want to thank all of our college districts that have adopted similar statements and resolutions. To that end, please inform my office if you become aware of any students, faculty or staff that have been detained or otherwise prevented from entering the United States. If you have information about such actions please have a single point of contact at your college call the California Community Colleges Office of the General Counsel at (916) 324-4711.
My office is monitoring the situation and will continue to work with the UC, CSU and the California Department of Justice. If further guidance is developed, we will send it to you as quickly as possible. Late Friday, President Trump signed an executive order banning U.S. entry of thoroughly-vetted refugees and citizens of seven nations in the Middle East and Africa, undermining the nation’s long-held values and making America less safe. The following is a statement from Esther D. Brimmer, Executive Director and CEO of NAFSA: Association of International Educators.

“This is simply inconceivable. The latest executive order, egregious enough in its aim to suspend the refugee program and to enact a blanket ban on visa approvals from these seven nations and Syrian refugees fleeing violence, has also caused enormous collateral damage in its implementation. Universities and colleges have already begun reporting cases of students and scholars stranded after traveling for reasons including studying abroad, attending conferences, and visiting sick or dying family members.

“This particular action took us away from policies, which in the past, have made our nation safe and strong. Thoughtful policies and not those that are capricious and unpredictable have kept our country growing and thriving economically and educationally. Moreover, this action overlooks the balance between the openness that makes us great with the security that keeps us safe. It ignores the careful and thorough vetting procedures that have been established to welcome those we want in our nation while keeping out those who intend us harm.

“The White House’s executive order to suspend refugee admissions and place a 90-day ban on individuals from certain countries, claims to be drafted with the goal of making America safe; however, there is no evidence that any of these actions will make America safer. In fact, they will actually undermine our future foreign relations. Perceived around the world as a thinly veiled attempt to target Muslim-majority countries, these new measures risk alienating friends and allies, particularly in this region where relationships are so vital.
“Hundreds of millions of travelers have safely entered and exited the United States over the years, benefiting our economy, our national security and our communities. President Trump has created a problem where one didn’t exist. True security lies in understanding the nature of threats and focusing on those who mean to cause us harm, not preventing an Iranian mother of a U.S. citizen child from returning home to America after visiting aging relatives.“To the students, scholars, doctors, refugees, family members and others who wonder if the United States has lost its commitment to its core values as a nation of freedom, opportunity and welcome, let me unequivocally state that American citizens will not tolerate policies such as these that undermine our values and endanger our safety. We understand that America is part of the global community, and we will raise our voices with Congress, with the White House, with the media and in our communities to continue to adhere to the principles that have always made us strongest.”

Executive Order: Travel Ban

The California State University is committed to being an inclusive and welcoming institution of higher education that is enhanced by the students, faculty, staff and alumni from our global community. We are deeply troubled by President Trump's recent executive order that stands in stark contrast to the fundamental tenets of the California State University. We believe in the free exchange of ideas globally, central to which is our ability to welcome and interact with those from around the world.

When something threatens our ability to think beyond our borders and learn from the world as a whole, we will oppose it. When something impacts anyone in our CSU community - especially the most vulnerable - it impacts us all.

Therefore, we oppose the divisiveness of the recent executive order, and we stand with state and national officials in requesting that the President reconsider this policy.

SUMMER 2017 COMPETITION; DUE APRIL 14

The UCLA Asia Pacific Center and Latin American Institute announce a funding opportunity open to California community college faculty. With support from the U.S. Department of Education, these grants are designed to support internationalization of curriculum at the community college level. Funding is available to faculty in all disciplines to create a new course or enhancements for an existing course to introduce international topics or perspective into the curriculum at your community college. Priority will be given to projects related to Latin America or Asia, though all world areas are eligible for consideration. Awards consist of: a stipend of up to $500 and travel expense reimbursement of up to $500 (total $1,000); and access to the UCLA Library collections. The application deadline is April 14, 2017. Projects must be completed by August 25, 2017, and a final syllabus or lesson plan must be submitted, along with a two-page statement which summarizes your research findings and outlines how your work at UCLA enhanced your project.

LESSONS FROM ABROAD STUDENT CONFERENCES

The objectives of the conferences are to offer opportunities to reflect on experiences gained for study abroad returnees and international students who will soon be study abroad returnees to their home countries. The conferences allow students from regional colleges to reflect on their recent international experiences, connect with other study abroad alumni, network with professionals from international organizations, and gain important skills for continual learning and application in their future career and academic paths. CALABROAD TOWN HALL: May 5

The Spring 2017 California Study Abroad Town Hall Meeting will be at California State University at Dominguez Hills on Friday, May 5. This is a free program and all community college faculty, staff, and administrators are invited. We will focus on important issues to help expand cooperation and support for study abroad between colleges and universities in California. The program will include presentations, small group discussions and open dialogue to share ideas and best practices.

CIHE: Comparative and International Higher Education Call for Contributors

CIHE: Comparative and International Higher Education is the official journal of the Comparative and International Education Society’s (CIES) Higher Education Special Interest Group (HESIG). CIHE publishes three on-line volumes a year: Fall, Spring, and a Special Edition in Winter. CIHE promotes scholarship opportunities, critical dialogue, and links professionals and academics to the international aspects of higher education. CIHE has an arrangement with University World News in which articles are cross-listed in each publication.

We invite those involved in higher education to contribute articles to advance discussions of current issues on comparative and international higher education. Articles should be 1500 - 2000 words in length and follow the Chicago Style. All articles will undergo a peer-editing process. Acceptance of articles is on-going.

Special Issue: Winter 2016. CIHE is working on the 2016 Special Edition that will highlight graduate student research in-progress to set the tone for current and emerging issues in the field. If you or your graduate students are currently working on research on international higher education, please consider writing a 500 word description of your research in-progress. The description should include: a) what your research is about; b) how the research contributes to comparative and international higher education; and c) what the main take-away of the research will be. Articles should follow the Chicago Style and are due by November 14.

IRELAND SITE VISIT

The Institute of Study Abroad Ireland is inviting community colleges to consider sending interested faculty to us on our bi-annual site visits. The site visits take place every April and September. The Institute of Study Abroad Ireland was founded in 1996, to provide authentic cultural and educational experiences in Ireland for visitors from North America. Since then, we have hosted hundreds of students, adults, families and groups, and provided a unique and unforgettable visit to Ireland.Twice each year, we run a partly-funded site visit to Ireland, and faculty are very welcome to apply for a place. JOIN GENERATION STUDY ABROAD

Do you know how many students at your college or university will study abroad before graduation? In the U.S. fewer than 10% of students will study abroad, and only 26% of those students are from underrepresented groups. The Institute of International Education's Generation Study Abroad campaign seeks to address this through mobilizing and supporting higher education institutions to greatly increase the number of students who go abroad. INNOVATIVE MARKETING FOR STUDY ABROAD IN YOUR CLASSROOMS

Heith Hennel from Valencia College in Florida has created an innovative way to market his faculty-led study abroad programs using Blackboard. He creates a YouTube announcement and then asks faculty throughout his college to “drop” it in their Blackboard so that all students will see it when they access their class. Information is simple in terms of the opportunity and for students to contact him via text-messaging if they want additional information. Since the announcement is in the Blackboard class - most students will open it and at least view it.

THE FORUM ON EDUCATION ABROAD LAUNCHES NEW CURRICULUM RESOURCES

The Forum’s Curriculum page now includes two new resources aimed at providing inspiration and sharing ideas for education abroad curriculum design from pre-departure through re-entry. The Curriculum Toolbox features syllabi, assignments, and course and program profiles submitted by faculty and practitioners in the field of education abroad, including past winners of the Award for Excellence in Education Abroad Curriculum Design. CRITICAL LANGUAGE SCHOLARSHIP (CLS) PROGRAM: INCREASING CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE RECIPIENTS

The CLS Program is a fully-funded, highly-structured overseas immersive language program for American students who are internationally minded or interested in learning a foreign language overseas. There is a special emphasis to recruit students from community colleges. Applications from community college students tripled last year.

1st year, 2nd year and part-time community college students enrolled in the Fall semester are eligible. The application opens in early September and closes in Mid-November. Staff from CLS are able to come to selected cities in California. In the past, student recipients were stronger as a result of these personal visits. In 2016, there were 5,760 applications and 568 awardees. Summer programs are offered in 14 languages. No prior study is required for Azerbaijani, Bangla, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Swahili, Turkish and Urdu. 1 year of study is required for Arabic and Persian.

Scholarships include fully-funded tuition, roundtrip airfare, housing and a living stipend. Academic credit is provided at Bryn Mawr College.

BENJAMIN A. GILMAN SCHOLARSHIPS: WHY ARE SO FEW CALIFORNIA COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENTS ACCEPTED?

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program is a congressionally funded program sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad. The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in education abroad, including but not limited to, students with high financial need, community college students, students in underrepresented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities. While CCIE is thrilled that so many of our students are earning these scholarships, when compared to universities, the community college award numbers are dismal. For 2015-2016 - about 2,700 California community college students studied abroad. Of these students only 105 students applied for the Gilman award. The rate of acceptance ranged from 25% to 33% for that year. Even more disturbing is that for Fall 2016, there was a total of 2,900 applications received; 850 awarded of which 15 went to community colleges (1.8%).

CCIE is happy to share that San Mateo District had a 100% acceptance rate of all four applicants for the Gilman Scholarship.

How many students studying on your programs are applying for the Gilman award? Most likely, these numbers need to increase.

Action needs to be taken. We have over 115 education abroad programs planned for 2016-2017. CCIE is advocating that each of these programs should have at least a few students acknowledged in each program for these awards. There are action items for each college to do to make this happen:

  • Make yourself familiar with the Gilman Scholarships, the application requirements, and their deadlines.
  • Educate your students about these scholarships and encourage them to apply
  • Work with your students to present a strong application
  • When your students are successful, share best practices in the CCIE Newsletter.

IES ABROAD CAREER OUTCOMES SURVEY - 2016

IES Abroad shares the results from the 2016 Career Outcomes survey that assesses the impact of study abroad on alumni’s employment outcomes and personal development. These results are compared to the 2012 survey.

The 2012 survey showed that 97% percent of alumni who graduated from college between 2009 and 2011 had secured full-time employment within a year of graduating. In comparison, a Rutgers University 2012 study of the general U.S. population showed that in the same time, only 49% of graduates had secured employment within a year of graduation. Study abroad students who graduated between 2006 and 2011 earned, on average, $7,000 more in starting salaries than U.S. college graduates during this same period from the general population. The 2016 survey shows that of alumni who graduated from 2012-2015, 73% secured their first job within two months or less of graduation, up from 67% of our alumni who graduated during 2006-2011. The median full-time starting salary increased nearly 7%. Nearly 90% of alumni who applied to graduate school earned admission into their first or second graduate program. More than 75% of reported that study abroad had a direct impact on their development of key employability traits, such as communication skills, adaptability, self-confidence, and cultural understanding. U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE STUDY ABROAD WEBSITE

The U.S. Department of State has launched a new State Department resource for U.S. students studying abroad. Our Students Abroad website (studentsabroad.state.gov) is a newly launched, mobile-friendly site designed to provide students, parents, and study abroad coordinators vital information related to studying abroad. This includes everything from how to get a passport to safety information while abroad.

We have also launched a #StudentsAbroad social media campaign to promote our new website. We encourage you to share our #StudentsAbroad social media content on your organization's accounts to help make sure this important information gets to your students. We have content on both Facebook and Twitter @TravelGov. This is especially important since so many students use social media as a source of information.

There will also be webinar opportunities for those who manage study abroad programs. Topics will include what to tell your students about obtaining passports and visas, how to stay up to date on safety information, and resources offered to students abroad by the State Department. ACADEMY OF INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS SOUTHEAST (AIB-SE) AND THE ASIA INSTITUTE SCHOLARSHIPS

In an effort to support the global competencies and knowledge of students interested in Asia, the Academy of International Business Southeast (AIB-SE) and the Asia Institute are collaborating to offer $1000 in scholarships supporting global learning experiences for students traveling to Asia in 2016.

Some of the key findings found in the Asia Short-Term Programs Report 2016 are:

  • In 2016, China, Japan and India remained the most popular destinations. However, short-term programs in China continue to decline year over year, by 6.2 percent from 2015 to 2016.
  • Between 2014 to 2016, short-term programs with a length of less than two weeks continued to decrease. Short-term programs with a length of over four weeks increased during the same period.
  • Nearly 79 percent of faculty leader respondents acknowledged that recruiting students was their largest challenge when developing their short-term program. 36.2 percent also noted that they led their short-term program with less than 10 students.
  • While study abroad and global program operations become more centralized, 29.2 percent of faculty leaders note that working with their university or college offices, including the Study Abroad Office, Legal Council etc. was a significant challenge to setup their short-term program.

BRING U.S. SCHOLARS AND PROFESSIONALS TO YOUR CAMPUS THROUGH THE FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR-in-RESIDENCE SPECIALIST PROGRAM

The Fulbright Specialist Program provides higher education institutions outside the United States with the opportunity to draw on the expertise of U.S. scholars and professionals to accomplish short-term projects (activities include lecturing, teacher training, curriculum development, needs assessments). The program is designed to award grants to qualified U.S. faculty and professionals, in select disciplines, to engage in short-term collaborative 2 to 6 week projects at host institutions in over 100 countries worldwide. International travel costs and a stipend are funded by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Participating host institutions cover grantee in-country expenses or provide in-kind services. Project activities focus on strengthening and supporting the development needs of host institutions abroad and do not fund personal or clinical medical research and related projects involving patient contact. Eligible activities include short-term lecturing, conducting seminars, teacher training, special conferences or workshops, as well as collaborating on curriculum planning, institutional and/or faculty development. U.S. faculty and professionals apply to join a Roster of Specialists for a five-year term. Roster candidates are reviewed by peers in the same discipline, and by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board (FSB).

How to Request a U.S. Fulbright Specialist: Foreign institutions interested in requesting a Fulbright Specialist must make their request through their local Fulbright Commission or the Public Affairs Office at the U.S. Embassy in their home countries. The form for requesting a Specialist is now available online to Fulbright commissions and embassies. Projects must be reviewed and approved by the home-country Fulbright office and the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

CCIE MEETING THE CHALLENGE FOR IIE GENERATION STUDY ABROAD

Study abroad has always been central to IIE’s mission and work. Building on nearly 100 years of commitment to study abroad, IIE will lead the Generation Study Abroad coalition in raising awareness of the need for students to gain language and cultural skills, identifying and breaking down barriers hindering students from studying abroad, sharing strategies and best practices to increase study abroad, and mobilizing additional financial resources. In addition to significantly expanding study abroad, the campaign will encourage and track campus activities that expand diversity in race and ethnicity, academic disciplines, and gender.

The Challenge According to Open Doors 2013, published by IIE in partnership with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, 295,000 American college students studied abroad in 2011/12 for credit and in non-credit programs. This represents only about 10% of the 2.6 million students who graduated with associates or baccalaureate degrees. In today’s increasingly global workplace, the number is far too low. Generation Study Abroad seeks to address this shortfall by bringing employers, governments, associations, and others together to build on current best practices and find new ways to extend study abroad opportunities to hundreds of thousands of college students who are not currently taking part in study abroad. International experience is now one of the most important components of a 21st century resume. Our goal is to change the paradigm so that study abroad is considered an essential part of a college education.

MEETING THE CHALLENGE From 2012-2016, CCIE member colleges increased both their study abroad program offering and the overall number of attending students. During the 2013-2014 academic year, 27 more study abroad programs were added state-wide and 481 more students. Growth is continuing for 2014-2015 with a total of 124 programs.

JAPANESE AMERICAN CITIZEN LEAGUE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS

The “KAKEHASHI Project-The Bridge for Tomorrow” is a youth exchange project, promoted by the Ministry Foreign Affairs in Japan, to heighten potential interest in Japan and increase the number of overseas visitors to the country, as well as enhance international understanding of the “Japan brand,” and the nation’s strengths and attractiveness. The KAKEHASHI Project- provides a fully funded short-term study tour to Japan for undergraduate and graduate students (ages 18-25 years old at the time of application) in the United States.

ACE MAPPING INTERNATIONALIZATION ON US CAMPUSES

ACE has a new free online tool to assess the state of internationalization and global engagement at a higher educational institution. Designed to be simple and easy-to-use, the tool requires users to answer 12 questions about various dimensions of their institution's internationalization strategy. Users then receive a report on how their institution compares to the colleges and universities that participated in the survey that served as a basis for ACE's 2012 survey, Mapping Internationalization on U.S. Campuses.

Using the tool, campus leaders can:

  • Highlight the strengths of their current internationalization initiatives;
  • Identify areas for improvement to become a more comprehensively internationalized institution;
  • Utilize data to make the case for internationalization efforts on campus.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT RECRUITMENT AGENCIES: A GUIDE FOR SCHOOLS, COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES (NACAC)

GLOBAL STUDENT MOBILITY (GSM) UPDATES

GSM was founded in late 2013 by Stephen Clegg after he had conceptualized and implemented the BOSSA Chinese Study Abroad Agency Fair London 2013 which was attended by 40 mainland Chinese agencies and 120 UK educators. In 2014 GSM arranged two roadshows in partnership with BOSSA attended by mainland Chinese agencies in the UK and the US visiting London, Cardiff, Brighton, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts. 9 of the agencies attending the US roadshow were AIRC certified agencies. In 2015 GSM arranged COSA/GSM Beijing & Shanghai 2015 in the Spring and then the AIRC Certified Agency Western USA Roadshow 2015 in the Fall. The latter visited California, Colorado, and Texas and was attended by agencies from India, mainland China, Bangladesh, and the USA. All 19 attending agencies at the AIRC roadshow were AIRC certified and over 50 educators attended the week. GSM’s shift in focus to SE Asia has been driven by increased interest in the SE Asia region from US Higher Education institutions and increased interest from agencies in the region to develop new partnerships in the US. GSM also believes that tangible results will be obtained in these regions where students are:
a) Not highly rankings driven;
b) Cost sensitive (in terms of tuition fee and cost of living);
c) Familiar with the community college offer;
d) Often benefitting from the extra support provided by community colleges (such as ESL provision and smaller classes); and
e) In most regions seeing lower visa rejection rates from the US compared to the UK and students seeing greater long term benefits afforded by study in the USA.

Events
Global Student Mobility (GSM) hosted three roadshows from October 24-28 in Florida, Georgia and Alabama with a speed-networking agency fair with meetings scheduled in advance with Marcom eSchedule PRO and with AIRC certified agencies from South Asia and GSM approved agencies from SE Asia. Additional roadshows will occur in 2017 in NJ, NY, MA, WA, OR and ID. There is a 20% discount for CCIE members. GSM AND NEW WEBSITE
GSM announces a new website: www.glosmo.com that is in English and Vietnamese and will soon be in Thai, Khmer (Cambodia) and Burmese (Myanmar) languages. CCIE member colleges that join the website will have their educator profiles translated into these languages. Registration for the portal is at http://gsm-uk.co.uk/8327-2/. Cost and benefits are explained in the website.

Students first register to the web-site and then complete their profile in English. There is a section where students can submit questions to educators. Profiles and questions will come to GSM and once approved will be sent on to educators along with contact details, academics, English level and areas of interest.

IELTS USA

CCIE is working with IELTS USA to support international student programs. IELTS USA’s mission is to support individuals and organizations within the United States in evaluating English language proficiency through high-stakes testing for the purpose of education, employment, professional accreditation and global mobility. In 2016, 2.7 million students took the IELTS tests.

IELTS hosted their first Stakeholder Workshop in San Diego. At this workshop, stakeholders have the opportunity to learn more about the test, including recommendations on how to conduct IELTS standards setting sessions, and details about IELTS test security. There will be three additional workshops in 2016. In addition, there will also be numerous IELTS webinars, including the Online Results Verification Service.

World Education Services New Research Report, Improving the International Student Experience: Implications for Recruitment and Support.

International students often face unique challenges to success while studying in the United States. Understanding those challenges and helping international students overcome them is key for higher education institutions that want to recruit and retain top international students. This report examines international students’ experiences, satisfaction, and expectations in U.S. colleges and universities. The research shows:

  1. The greatest area of dissatisfaction is career services (66% overall satisfaction rate), especially when it comes to assistance in finding employment and internships after graduation (64% overall satisfaction).
  2. Students from the Middle East & North Africa struggle the most with English skills (38%) and are more dissatisfied compared to other international students with the English language courses at their institutions.
  3. International students who are satisfied with their U.S. experience are more likely to recommend their institutions to others.

Santa Monica College Wins 2017 IIE Andrew Heiskell Award for Internationalizing Minority Serving Institutions category and will be featured by IIENetwork as a "best practice" in international education

Santa Monica Colleges was awarded one of the Andrew Heiskell Awards for Innovation in International Education and their Global Citizenship program was selected to receive the 2017 IIE Andrew Heiskell Award for Internationalizing Minority Serving Institutions category. Santa Monica College is a highly diverse minority-serving institution that also serves the second largest international student population among community colleges nationwide. Its Global Citizenship Initiative has internationalized the college’s mission, culture, and values and yielded a community that works together to create global citizens – students who are knowledgeable of peoples, customs, and cultures beyond their own world, understanding the interdependence that holds both promise and peril for us all and committing to fostering a livable, sustainable world.

Through a college-wide effort that grew out of a faculty task force convened in 2008, Global Citizenship is now a part of the college fabric and is reflected in the mission "Changing Lives in the Global Community through Excellence in Education." Year-round programming, including an annual Global Citizenship theme woven into the curriculum, International Education Week, and an end-of-year Research Symposium with a focus on global issues, furthers dialogue, engages international students, and ensures that the community remains active and engaged in global issues.

Faculty mini-grants bring to campus innovative internationally-oriented programs ranging from events like the fourth annual "Ecofeminism Conference" to a faculty-led cultural tour of Los Angeles’s ethnic communities. The college introduced short-term programs that are more affordable for low-income students, who traditionally do not participate in study abroad, and has set aside $75,000 in Global Citizenship scholarships to enable these students to take part. Professional development programs abroad for faculty to destinations such as Salzburg, China and Turkey require participants to develop course modules and lesson plans that integrate the history, politics, culture, economy and social issues of the visited countries. These activities have worked individually and collectively to internationalize the college community. Since the establishment of an Institutional Learning Outcome focused on global citizenship, an average of 86% of students each year have achieved mastery in this area as measured by course-related learning outcomes. This is a remarkable achievement and demonstrates the commitment of the college community to preparing its students for careers in a globally connected world.

Every single one of us had a role to play in carrying out a plan that began as a strategic initiative and has become a part of the culture of our college.”

College of the Canyons: Intersecting International Programming by Jia-Yi Cheng-Levine, Ph.D., Director, International Services and Programs (ISP).

College of the Canyons Model United Nations (COCMUN) will be participating in the upcoming International Negotiations Modules Project (INMP). Under the guidance of faculty adviser, Dr. Phil Gussin, the COCMUN team will be representing Brazil. Dr. Gussin is also the co-chair of the Comprehensive Internationalization committee which was recently formed under the auspices of the International Services and Programs (ISP). To help prepare for the INMP, four ISP students from Brazil will be working with the COCMUN team, the only community college included in the Top 50 national rankings for Fall 2016. The collaboration between ISP students and the COCMUN team will not only aid in the preparation for the INMP but it will also facilitate the integration of international and domestic students at College of the Canyons. Additionally, it will further demonstrate the extent to which international students enhance the quality of education for all students.

SHASTA COLLEGE & Soonchunhyang University Summer Program By Dr Keith Brookshaw, Counselor - International Students Program, Shasta College

Shasta College for the past nine years has been involved in a Cultural Internship Program where over 75 students had the unique opportunity to work and study abroad at Soonchunhyang University in South Korea. Soonchunhyang University has been providing CCIE member colleges student scholarships since 2003. Through their Global Education Program students lived full-time with Soonchunhyang University students who had special interests in learning English as a Second Language. Upon completing their time in S. Korea and returning home many of the Shasta students noted that this program gave them a one in a lifetime experience to be able to go and live in an Asian country and to learn about Korean culture and traditions. Not only did they learn a new second language, but they established lifelong friendships and relationships (two marriages) with each other that is still ongoing today.

At the beginning of this program we did not conduct ourselves as a student exchange program or were considered mutual partners since we only sent our students to their university, but we did not reciprocate their students to attend Shasta College. So to build a stronger working relationship with each other, in 2015, Shasta College developed a three week summer program that targeted Soonchunhyang students who were majoring in Hospitality Management and Tourism. Last summer was the first time that the program was initiated with four students completing the program. In summer, 2016, seven students completed the three week program. The program consisted of a Computer Science class and a Hospitality Management class. Included in the course work were visitations to various on-site travel and tourist agencies within the North State; their program also included weekend trips to San Francisco, Napa and Mendocino counties and participation in our Annual Fourth of July celebration.

The Shasta College and Soonchunhyang University summer program has brought both institutions closer together with the goal of providing a quality educational experience for all of our students. There are future plans to increase the number of students each year and to look at other potential programs that we can expand on in the future. Over all, we can state that this is a win-win relationship, because we are now true mutual partners that not only sent, but also receive each other's students on an annual basis.

Santa Monica College Updates

Santa Monica College has several new short-term study abroad programs that are part of their Global Citizenship initiates. In all the study abroad programs, SMC is seeing an increasing number of F-1 students participate in study abroad. Among the 2017 students study abroad are 6 F-1 students from Sweden, Bulgaria, France and China. F- 1 students area also eligible for the SMC Glboal Citizenship scholarships. We are also seeing a few students (one is a Swedish student) participate in 2-3 study abroad programs during their time at SMC. The F-1 students cite that it is a great way to get to know American students!
- The District awarded $ 12,500 in Global Citizenship scholarships for the Denmark Field Studies Abroad being offered for Spring Break. This program is now filled.
- The Spring Break Field Studies Abroad program to St. Petersburg is still accepting applicants.
- The District also awarded $24,500 in Global Citizenship scholarships for participants in the winter session South Africa program.

PERALTA DISTRICT

Peralta District will host their third annual Study Abroad Fair. Each year has been growing and growing. This year's fair will be hosted at Berkeley City College in downtown Berkeley, CA. To reserve your space to promote your programs to our students, staff and faculty, please complete the registration process.
